On May 9, shipping traffic at Iran’s busy Shahid Rajaee port terminal came to a sudden and inexplicable halt. Namely, the computers all crashed at once, leading to massive backups on waterways and roads.
One day after the attack, the Washington Post reported that Iranian officials acknowledged that a hacker had briefly knocked the port’s computers offline.
Now, a week after the attack, reports note that the cyber attack appears to have originated from Israel.
Namely, it is alleged that the attack was carried out by Israeli operatives, presumably in retaliation for an earlier attempt by Iran to penetrate computers that operate rural water distribution systems in Israel.
Israel has not made any comments on the allegation, while Iran has denied involvement in the failed April 24 hacking attempt on Israeli water distribution networks.
However, on May 8, Washington Post cited foreign intelligence sources, saying that Iran had been linked to the attempted cyber-attack on at least two rural water distribution networks in Israel.
