Guidelines for vessels and shipping companies
The Clean Shipping Index (Index) is a tool used by cargo owners toassess the environmental performance of shipping. The Index coversmost significant environmental impacts and is calculated by the shippingcompany entering data for each of their ships into a web-based database. The database presents the score achieved for the ships in the shippingcompany fleet and gives a ranking to other vessels, but also to othershipping companies.
The Verification Guidelines were developed by the Clean ShippingProject, in cooperation by Det Norske Veritas (DNV), Gothenburg andLloyds Register (LR), London/Gothenburg.
The Verification Guidelines should be followed when performing a shipverification of the Clean Shipping Index in order to issue a Certificate ofVerification. The Verification Guidelines should also be followed inorder to issue a Certificate of Verification of a Shipping company.
One of the network’s goals is to gradually have the vessels in the index verified in order to be able to base transport buying decisions on data with high credibility.
All the carriers aspiring procurement from the Network members are required to verify at least two vessels in their fleet according to the Clean Shipping Index. A third party verification service of the information submitted to the Clean Shipping Index is offered by Bureau Veritas, DNV, Lloyds Register, Germanischer Lloyd, RINA and Korean Register.
The verification involves an office audit and a ship audit and can be combined with for example an ISO14001 certification or class registration.
