On 11th September, Ocean Explorer, one of the small expedition cruise ships, ran aground in Greenland, in a remote part of the Arctic.
According to news, Arctic Command received a message that the cruise ship Ocean Explorer had run aground in Alpefjord in Northeast Greenland and that the ship is not immediately able to free itself.
On Monday afternoon West Greenlandic time, the Arctic Command received a message that the cruise ship Ocean Explorer was grounded in the Alpefjord in Northeast Greenland, and that the ship is not immediately able to be freed by its own help.
..Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command said in a statement on Tuesday.
There are 206 passengers and crew members on board the Ocean Explorer. The initial report was that there were no injuries as a result of the grounding.
As informed, the cruise ship was built in 2021 for SunStone Ships as a part of a class of expedition ships designed by Ulstein.
The Ocean Explorer was the fourth in the series that is outfitted for polar regions.
A cruise ship in trouble in the National Park is of course worrying. The nearest help is far away, our units are far away, and the weather can be very unfavorable. However, in this specific situation, we do not see any immediate danger to human life or the environment, which is reassuring.
…says Brian Jensen.
According to the announcement, Arctic Command’s closest unit is the inspection vessel Knud Rasmussen, which at the time of the report was approximately 1,200 nautical miles from the cruise ship. This means that the earliest the Knud Rasmussen can reach the grounded ship is Friday morning local time. However, the weather may play a role.
They can either try to get out on their own when the tide is high, they can get help from a nearby cruise ship, they can get help from Knud Rasmussen, or they can get help from one of our partners. No matter what, the most important thing for us is that everyone is safe.
..said the Head of Operations in Arctic Command.
