Royal Caribbean has made the decision to suspend cruise ship visits to Labadee, a port on the northern coast of Haiti, due to escalating violence in the island.
As CNN reports, the cruise company cited safety concerns for its guests, crew, and the communities they visit as their primary reason for suspending stops in Haiti. Labadee serves as a private port for Royal Caribbean in Haiti, situated approximately 130 miles from the capital, Port-au-Prince.
The capital has been experiencing heightened gang violence since early March, exacerbating the political crisis gripping the country. Royal Caribbean’s port in Labadee is nestled on a peninsula in northern Haiti and is accessible exclusively to guests and employees of the Royal Caribbean Group.
According to CNN, Royal Caribbean stated that its Global Security and Intel Team is closely monitoring the situation in Haiti and will continue to assess the need for adjustments to scheduled sailings. They have assured guests that they will receive direct updates regarding any changes.
To remind, the following ports are operating, but in a limited capacity:
- Varreux
- Thor
- Abraham
- Cap Haïtien
- Laffiteau
