The dismantling and recycling of the Concordia cruise ship, one of the most important green ship recycling projects ever carried out in Europe, has been completed by San Giorgio del Porto, in partnership with Saipem, less than three years after the ship arrived in Genoa.
As informed, the workforce employed reached the 350 people, who worked in total 1 million hours. The amount of total recycled material was approximately 90% and the dismantled material was 8,000 tons, with over 850 trips to dismantling facilities. The project involved 78 companies and suppliers.
“The success of these operations represents an additional recognition of the high value of Italian naval engineering, while demonstrating the importance of a ship recycling activity that is respectful of the environment and of the safety of workers, in accordance with the most recent European regulations”, noted San Giorgio del Porto.
The Costa Concordia’s grounding, in January 2012, caused death of 32 people and the ship’s captain was recently sentenced to 16 years in prison, for manslaughter.
