For his role in the 2012 shipwreck that killed 32 people off Giglio
Italian court sentenced Francesco Schettino to 16 years in prison for his role in the Costa Concordia accident in which 32 people killed. The former captain of the Costa Concordia was convicted of of multiple manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning his passengers in one of the highest-profile shipping disasters in recent years.
International media reports that Schettino will not go to jail before the end of Italy’s long appeals process, which can take years after the court said he would not be imprisoned or put under house arrest until the whole appeals process is complete.
He was accused of bringing the vessel too close to shore and also delaying evacuation and abandoning ship before all the 4,229 passengers and crew had been rescued.
On May 2013, the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) released the long awaited English translation of its report on the safety technical investigation into the marine casualty on January 13, 2012 involving the cruise ship Costa Concordia.
According to the report he main cause of the casualty is attributed to“the Master’s unconventional behavior”. The incident resulted in the death of 32 persons and the injury of 157 others, as well as the loss of the ship and significant environmental damage.
