Corvus Energy will supply the energy storage system (ESS) for battery-hybrid RTG cranes by CCCC Shanghai Equipment Engineering (CCCCSEE). The order is for retrofit and newbuild deliveries in Chinese ports. The new hybrid powered port cranes are expected to provide significant benefits.
The hybrid powered port cranes are powered primarily from a battery package, leading in fuel savings of up to 65%. The added benefits include reduced operating costs, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and less noise levels at the terminal.

The Orca Energy ESS stores regenerative braking energy captured as the RTG crane lowers a container. The stored energy then powers the RTG crane during operations like trolley and gantry movement, enabling the diesel engine to be shut off when it would be idling or operating inefficiently at low loads.
In addition, the size of the generator can be smaller, while the generator can be used less often and its operation could be optimized for fuel efficiency.
Commenting on the new cranes Pradeep Datar, VP Sales Corvus Energy Asia, said:
We expect the market for battery-hybrid RTG crane applications will continue to grow as leading port equipment suppliers such as CCCCSEE prove the technology’s efficacy to significantly reduce emissions
He also explained that there is significant retrofit potential with existing RTG cranes in global ports, especially in Asia which operates half the world’s roughly 10,000 RTG cranes. What is more, there is an increasing trend for hybrid and all-electric RTG cranes in new orders.
