The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) said that, on 6th December, a container ship and a floating bridge collided in the Suez Canal’s eastern lane, although the flow of ships through the canal remained unaffected, Reuters highlights.
According to a statement from the authorities, tugboats assisted the One Orpheus after it had a rudder malfunction while travelling through the canal on its route from Singapore to the Netherlands.
The event took place in the middle portion of the canal’s eastern lane, which was constructed as part of an extension that was finished in 2015.
Ships from the south were rerouted down the canal’s original branch, and the canal administration said that when the defective rudder was fixed, the One Orpheus and six other ships behind it started travelling again.
One of the busiest shipping channels in the world, the Suez Canal provides Egypt with a significant amount of foreign currency.
The southern, single-lane portion of the canal is now being expanded after a massive cargo ship grounded there in 2021, obstructing traffic for six days.
