In a significant milestone, the Republic of the Congo celebrated the commencement of liquefied natural gas (LNG) production with the first shipment.
According to ENi, this development positions the Republic of the Congo as a new entrant into the group of LNG-exporting nations, presenting economic growth opportunities and contributing to the global energy balance. Eni, having a presence in Congo since 1968, has been actively involved in developing the country’s gas resources.
The event was marked by the President of the Republic of the Congo, Denis Sassou-N’Guesso, alongside Eni’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, Giuseppe Zafarana, and CEO, Claudio Descalzi. Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi acknowledged the achievement, attributing it to the strong collaboration between Eni, its partners, and the support of the Congolese government.

The Congo LNG project, sanctioned in December 2022, successfully started production within just one year, aligning with the initial timeline. The project, located within the Marine XII permit, is expected to reach a plateau gas liquefaction capacity of approximately 4.5 billion cubic meters per annum, with the first LNG cargo en route to Piombino’s regasification terminal in Italy.
To remind, Eni recently introduced gas into the Tango Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) facility off the coast of the Republic of Congo. According to Eni, the Tango FLNG facility features “split mooring” configuration that has a liquefaction capacity of about 1 billion cubic meters per year (BCMA), moored alongside the Excalibur Floating Storage Unit (FSU).
