Royal Niestern Sander shipyard along with Mercury Sakhalin and Pola recently shake their hands and inked an agreement in order to construct the world’s first shallow draft ice-breaking walk to walk vessel.
Following its delivery in December 2021, Mercury Sakhalin will operate the vessel at the East coast of Sakhalin for the oil and gas industry.
Behind the initiative’s establishment will be Wagenborg, which will share its experience concerning operations in shallow waters.
For the records, the shallow draft ice-breaking vessel will be designed to sail under challenging conditions on the East coast of Sakhalin, with temperatures ranging from -30 degrees to +35 degrees.
Installed with Wagenborg icebreaking technology of the icebreaking hull and pulling Azimuth thrusters, the vessel has the ability to break ice approximately up to one metre.
Overall, this is not the first time that Wagenborg and Mercury Sakhalin collaborating, as they have worked together back in November 2019, for the ice-breaking support vessel Arcticaborg’s construction.
