MT Glenn Marine disposed domestic waste , oil and grease without permission
International environmental group, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), said that the recent report of the alleged dumping of a US Navy contractor of toxic wastes in Subic only underscores the larger problem of oceanic pollution, ABS CBN reports
WWF raised this concern following reports alleging that MT Glenn Guardian dumped toxic waste in the waters of Subic. Motor tanker is owned by Glenn Defense Marine Asia Inc., a Malaysian firm commissioned by the US Navy to collect waste products during the war exercises between the Philippines and its former colonizer. The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) and the Glenn Defense Marine Philippines Inc. have since denied the reports.
According to SunStar, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) dismissed reports alleging that a defense contractor for the United States dumped hazardous wastes in Philippine waters last month.
Media reports alleged that MT Glenn Marine disposed domestic waste and mixed water, oil and grease in the vicinity waters off Subic, Zambales without a discharge permit from the Philippine government.
The results of the SBMA Ecology Center’s initial investigation showed that ship waste dumped into the bay last month by MT Glenn Guardian, was not hazardous. But tests conducted by Subic Water and Sewerage Co. showed the organic contents of the waste were “beyond permissible limits,” according to Inquirer.
An Inquirer source also said that industrial grade waste was hazardous and its disposal in Philippine waters was a violation of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Administrative Order No. 35 setting standards for the disposal of wastewater.
