China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES) has received unanimous approval from its board of directors for the construction the world’s first methanol-powered VLCC.
Dalian Shipyard has been selected as the site for the construction the vessel, set to become the world’s first methanol-powered Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC). With a price tag of $107.5 million, this ambitious project is poised to revolutionise the maritime industry.
According to a statement from CMES, the delivery of the vessel is expected to take place by April 2026 at the latest.
Generally, the methanol orderbook has been expanding significantly. For instance, in mid-August Wallenius Wilhelmsen signed a letter of intent for four Shaper Class methanol-capable and ammonia-ready car carriers. As for container ships, almost 50 vessels have been ordered Evergreen and Maersk alone.
