The container ship CMA CGM Fidelio, built in 2006 by Hyundai Heavy Industries, caught fire off Ibiza, Spain while en route from Valencia to Malta, on March 24, media report.
The fire is said to have started from the crew cabins. Eventually, the crew started firefighting immediatelly. The local authorities and the Salvamento Maritimo Spain were notified as well. In particullar, they assisted by mobilizing two rescue boats and being in continuous contact with the duty officer. However, the crew managed to extinguish the flames on their own. The 113,964 DWT container ship stopped engines and remained adrift 15 nautical miles off Ibiza, during the firefighting operations.
The overall damage caused and the root cause are yet unknown, but a safety inspection at the port of destination is due to be conducted. Luckily, no injured people or water pollution were reported.
Finally, the ship resumed voyage to Malta in order to be surveyed.
