On the occasion of the June 5th World Environment Day, the CMA CGM Group, confirms its objective set at 50 % reduction CO2/teu-km between 2005 and 2015. In 2013, the global operated fleet CO2 performance has been improved by 4 %, and even 8 % for the owned fleet, thus a 40 % reduction achieved since 2005.
The CMA CGM Group implements actions to minimize the impact of its activities on the environment, and develops new ecological solutions. Significant milestones have been reached, confirming the quality of the Groups’ environmental policy.
Inaugurated in June 2013 by French President François Hollande, the CMA CGM Jules Verne is already compliant with IMO 2025 standards in terms of energy efficiency. It is equipped with a propeller boss cap fin, the Fast Oil Recovery, hydrodynamic bulbous bow and a ballast water treatment system based on UV lights.
The year 2013 has seen the first ships being retrofitted with new bulbous bows to continuously improve energy efficiency. The new thiner bulbous bows enable to improve energetic efficiency. Three 8 500 TEU vessels have already been equipped and 25 additional vessels will be by the end of the year. Optimization of bulbous bows represents a sensible reduction of CO2 emissions.
In 2013, in cooperation with classification societies and Chinese shipyards, CMA CGM has been pursuing its work on an alternative propulsion project for an LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) powered container carrier that should help to reduce CO2 emissions by a further 20% and to eliminate pollutant gas emissions (sulphur and nitrogen oxides in particular).
In order to reduce harmful emissions of diesel engines, when the ships are docked, the CMA CGM Group will equip 6 ships with a mobile container solution, making Cold Ironing (or AMP) a modular practice. This mobile solution can possibly be moved onto other ships fitted upon request, thus making Cold Ironing a practice that is flexible and easy to deploy. The Group installed the first device on the CMA CGM LIBRA (11 400 TEUs) in January 2014.
Those actions were rewarded with several high distinctions for the expertise and the engagement of the CMA CGM Group teams towards ever cleaner ships and CMA Ships was granted the ISO 14001 certificate.
