CMA CGM and Google have announced a strategic partnership to accelerate the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) across CMA CGM’s operations worldwide.

This collaboration aims to revolutionize shipping by enhancing efficiency, responsiveness, and adaptability to market fluctuations and disruptions, resulting in faster and more responsive customer service. As part of the partnership, CMA CGM will actively seek to optimize vessel routes, container handling, and inventory management to ensure efficient and timely delivery of goods while minimizing costs and carbon footprints.
The use of AI in maritime operations
During the 2023 SMART4SEA Athens Forum, Themistoklis Sardis, IT Manager, Costamare Shipping Company S.A. presented the various applications of AI in the shipping industry
- Fleet Management: AI can be used to optimize fleet operations and improve the efficiency of shipping routes, by analyzing data from GPS, weather and traffic.
- Predictive Maintenance: AI can be used to predict when equipment and vehicles will need maintenance, this will help to reduce downtime and save costs.
- Autonomous ships: AI can be used to develop autonomous ships that can navigate, dock, and make decisions on their own, increasing safety and efficiency in the industry.
- Cargo Optimization: AI can be used to optimize cargo loading and unloading, by analyzing data on cargo weight and volume, vessel stability, and port infrastructure.
- Risk Management: AI-based risk management systems can analyze data from various sources to identify and mitigate risks in the shipping industry, such as weather, traffic and piracy.
- Supply Chain Management: AI can be used to optimize the entire shipping process, from order management, to logistics and inventory management.
CEVA Logistics, part of CMA CGM, is also adopting data-driven practices to optimize its 10.3 million square meters of warehouse space. Partnering with Google, CEVA Logistics will implement smart management tools for better volume and demand forecasting, aiming to enhance operational efficiency.
The collaboration also extends to CMA Media, where Google’s AI capabilities will assist in developing tools to support journalists in tasks such as document synthesis, media snippet generation, and digital archiving.
This partnership is part of CMA CGM’s strategy to integrate AI across its operations, including investments in AI startups and establishing training programs at TANGRAM for associates to acquire AI skills.
