When employers talk about problem-solving skills, they mean the ability to handle difficult or unexpected situations. Complex problem solving is indeed included at the top three of the most wanted skills for 2025, according to World Economic Forum. And while this is a critical skill to have at work, especially in leadership positions, chances are that most of us never had some special training in it.
Problems are part of life, but inability to deal with problems is a problem itself. Actually, the most common mistake in problem solving is trying to find a solution right away, forgetting that solutions are the end and not the beginning of a structured mind process:
- Define the problem: Start by specifying underlying causes, trying to differentiate fact from opinion.
- Identify interests: Implement active listening to identify the best solution –the one that satisfies everyone’s interests.
- List the possible solutions: Put your creativity, include all the alternatives and do not underestimate the power of brainstorming!
- Evaluate the options: Examine all the alternatives without bias, assessing both proven and possible outcomes.
- It’s time to make a choice: Which option makes the fine balance?
- Follow up: Document the feedback and evaluate long-term results based on the final solution.
Remember: Active listening, creativity and decision-making are three good skills to start working on, in order to strengthen your problem solving ability!
