NYK and TB Global Technologies Ltd. (TBG) have received the world’s first Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate, from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK), for a ship-to-ship fuel ammonia supply system.
This innovative bunkering boom is specifically designed for ammonia-fueled vessels. The approval highlights the unique features of the system, particularly TBG’s emergency-release mechanism, which allows for the instant disconnection between an ammonia-fueled vessel and an ammonia bunkering vessel (ABV) in case of emergencies.
NYK and TB Global Technologies Ltd. (TBG) have reached a basic agreement to collaboratively develop Japan’s first ammonia bunkering boom in April 2023. This technology aims to address the challenge of preventing leakage during emergencies, utilizing TBG’s technology to contain any liquid that may escape if the boom is rapidly deployed.
The bunkering boom consists of rigid pipes and hoses connecting the bunkering vessel to the receiving ship for fuel supply.
The Approval in Principle was granted during Gastech 2024 in Houston, U.S.A., on September 18.
