ClassNK, the leading classification society, certified the Cyber Security Management System (CSMS) of NYK LNG Shipmanagement Ltd. (LNGSM), the NYK Group subsidiary, and its managed LNG carrier Pacific Mimosa; becoming the first CSMS certified by the Society.
In fact, the certification was awarded to LNGSM by Class NK at NYK’s head office in Tokyo, on December 16.

According to a NYK Group statement, the purpose of obtaining this certification is to strengthen security management through human operations, alongside hardware measures such as systems that NYK and Dualog are developing to monitor and manage the security condition of onboard equipment and ship-to-shore communications- with the further aim to strengthen its cyber resilience and make its operations safer.
What is said, the CSMS certification inspection confirms information about the CSMS developed for both the company and the ship. In particular, it assesses cyber security policies; risk assessment; and standards as established by the Society.
“The CSMS of NYK LNG Shipmanagement Ltd. and “PACIFIC MIMOSA” were confirmed to be in line with ClassNK’s standards, allowing for the Society to issue certification,” according to ClassNK.
What is more, the classification society released its “Cyber Security Management System for Ships” in March 2019 aiming to provide guidance on ensuring; implementing; maintaining; and continuously improving the cyber security management system of companies and ships, aiming at safe navigation.
Notably, it includes management measures regarding protection against cyber risks in not only the navigation stage, but also in the construction and design stage of ships.
It was at the the 98th session of the IMO Maritime Safety Committee (MSC98) in June 2017 that recommended that a description of cyber-risk management be included in the safety management systems (SMS manual) of shipowners and ship-management companies, thereby encouraging strengthened measures against cyberattacks globally.
NYK then revised LNGSM’s SMS manual to include measures related to cybersecurity, such as work procedures to prevent cyber incidents and to respond to incidents after they occur, in accordance with Class NK’s CSMS guideline; according to NYK, the revised manual was evaluated for being consistent with the CSMS guidelines in terms of the implementation of cybersecurity policies and risk assessments.
Lastly, the classification society “will now continue to provide cyber security services that address the expanding needs of clients and promote safe ship navigation,” and NYK Group aims to further strengthen cyber-risk management for other LNG carriers as well as cargo vessels.
