On August 17, 2024, China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES) announced a significant advancement in its fleet expansion and sustainability strategy.
Through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Associated Maritime Co Ltd (AMCL), CMES has secured contracts with Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. to build 10 state-of-the-art, energy-efficient oil tankers. The investment, amounting to around RMB 6.638 billion, highlights CMES’ dedication to environmental stewardship and global competitiveness.
The order includes:
- 5 VLCCs (Very Large Crude Carriers), each with a deadweight of 306,000 dwt
- 5 Aframax tankers, each with a deadweight of 115,000 dwt
These new vessels will feature advanced environmental technologies such as shaft generators and scrubbers, ensuring adherence to the latest NOx, SOx, and CO2 emission regulations. Delivery is scheduled between 2027 and 2028.
As explained, this substantial order is a pivotal element of CMES’ strategy to modernize its fleet, replace outdated ships, and expand its Aframax tanker operations. It reinforces the company’s position as a leader in sustainable shipping by enhancing fleet efficiency and reducing emissions, thus boosting its market competitiveness while contributing to a more environmentally friendly future for global shipping.
