Following the Coyhaique roro that ran aground the previous week, the Authorities continue the rescue operations for 200 cattle in trucks. The vessel, allegedly, ran aground after the captain committed suicide and hanged himself.
Local sources reported that the ship-to-ship transfer operation continues.
The first cattle were transmitted of the Coyhaique roro after the navy managed to stabilise the vessel and transferred it to a more sheltered location.
In the meantime, to assist the operation, some smaller vessels are coming alongside the ship and the cattle are slowly being moved to a nearby port.
Yet, approximately 40 of the 244 cattle have perished so far.
Moreover, local authorities are looking for Navimag, the ship’s owner to get answers on the accident and on the conditions under which the animals were being transported.
The Ro-Ro cargo ship ‘Coyhaique’ grounded in Aysén waters, off the Chilean Port of Aguirre in the early morning hours of 3 July. All of the ship’s crew and passengers were evacuated as a result.
