The Republic of Marshall islands issued a notice to remind that the 31st December 2018 is the SEEMP Part II deadline under MARPOL Annex VI, Regulation 22.2. The Administrator encourages RMI-flagged ships subject to this requirement to submit their SEEMP Part II to their ROs as soon as possible before the year-end deadline to avoid non-compliance.

Spanish ferry operator Baleària announced construction of the world’s first fast passenger and cargo ferry powered by dual-LNG engines, being built in the Armon de Gijón shipyard. With a length of 125 meters and a beam of 28 meters, the new catamaran will have capacity for 1,200 passengers and 500 cars, which also makes it ‘the longest and highest-capacity fast ferry catamaran’.
MEPC 73 tightened EEDI requirements for certain ship types, but confirmed that ferries would be among the categories where it is appropriate to retain the original timeline and reduction rates. These had been set in three phases, requiring improvements of 10% by 2015, 20% by 2020 and 30% by 2025.
MOL will retrofit 80 of its operated bulkcarriers with a new service called NAPA Fleet Intelligence with Noon Report developed by NAPA Ltd. NAPA FI uses information from the vessel’s logs and AIS, to analyze propulsion performance. NAPA FI verifies the effects of measures to limit GHG emissions from MOL-operated vessels.

A consortium of key international industry key players in smart technology has joined forces to radically improve performance of container ships and forming a new business model for this market, in response to shipping’s weak economic and ecological performance.
Innovative technology will be developed in Hamburg to enable large and very large container ships to switch off their auxiliary diesel supplies during lay time and draw the power for on-board operations from a mobile generator. Namely, Becker Marine Systems, Hapag-Lloyd AG and Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG have been testing the new technology as part of a joint pilot project.
