A dry cargo vessel named Lady Ayana, loaded with wheat and en route from Russia to Tunisia, ran aground in the Marmara Sea off the coast of Istanbul on June 28, 2024.
According to international news sources, the 169-meter ship had anchored off the Bakirkoy district on the European side of Istanbul before the incident occurred. The reasons behind the grounding of the Lady Ayana remain unclear.
In response to the situation, the Coastal Safety Directorate of the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure initiated rescue operations. They dispatched three fast rescue boats and a tugboat to assist in salvaging the vessel.
The ship had successfully navigated the Bosphorus Strait from the Black Sea to the Marmara Sea and was intended to continue through the Aegean Sea to the Mediterranean Sea on its way to Tunisia.
Efforts to rescue the vessel and ensure the safety of its crew and cargo are ongoing.
