The Antigua Barbuda-flagged general cargo ship ‘BBC Amethyst’ collided with a lock in the Kiel Canal in Kiel-Holtenau, Germany, in the early morning hours of Sunday, 7th April.
The vessel was en route from Norrköping, Sweden to Rotterdam, Netherlands, at the time of the incident.
The ship was about to enter the large northern lock at about 06:45 am, but it ended up colliding with the control centre of the locks. Initial estimations suggest the ship had excessive speed at the time.
As a result, the port side of the 154-meter ship hit and damaged the lock control center as well as a part of the quay and the fender.
There were two people inside the building at the time, but luckily there were no injuries. The incident is under investigation.
The ship continued its voyage a few hours after the collision and arrived in the port of Rotterdam on 9 April. AIS data show the ship is currently underway off France.
