The Methanol Institute (MI) yesterday announced that Cargill Ocean Transportation has joined as its newest member.
Cargill has already shown a preference for methanol as an alternative fuel solution. For instance, in January 2023, Cargill Ocean Transportation announced orders for their first two methanol dual fuel kamsarmax bulk carriers with Mitsui & Co. Ltd., set for delivery in 2025-26.
Through our engagement with MI, we aim to stay at the forefront of methanol developments, leverage the expertise of the MI’s partner members, and lend our expertise to relevant MI committees.

Furthermore, in April 2023, two additional methanol dual fuel kamsarmax bulk carriers were announced, along with a fifth one in June 2023. All three vessels were announced in collaboration with Denmark’s J Lauritzen. The user states that the five new vessels will be the world’s first methanol-fueled bulkers to enter commercial service and will assist Cargill and its customers in achieving their Scope 3 climate goals.
As demonstrated by Cargill’s methanol dual-fuel vessel orders, they are a first mover in the freight-trading segment. As Cargill tacks to methanol, Michigan looks forward to working with the shipping leader on its low carbon journey.
