Captain Sir Ian McNaught has been appointed as the new President of the Merchant Navy Welfare Board (MNWB). He recently retired as Deputy Master of The Corporation of Trinity House, where he had served for 13 years.
This appointment marks a significant step for the MNWB, which represents 47 charities supporting the UK Merchant Navy and fishing fleet. The Board is dedicated to improving the welfare of seafarers and fishers, and Capt. McNaught’s extensive experience is expected to be invaluable in this role.
Capt. McNaught brings a wealth of maritime expertise, having started his career in the Merchant Navy in 1971. He served as captain for Cunard and Seabourn, including commanding the iconic Queen Elizabeth 2.
He also held various leadership positions within Trinity House, including Deputy Master and Chief Executive of the Lighthouse Board. His other roles include Governor of the RNLI, Board member of the North Standard P&I Club, and Vice President of the Marine Society and Sea Cadets.
Expressing his honor at the appointment, Capt. McNaught emphasized his commitment to raising awareness of seafarers’ welfare and ensuring their needs are met.
