Local emergency responders in Iqaluit, Nunavut, are diligently monitoring and coordinating their response to a recent incident involving shipping containers that fell off a barge on October 27th.
According to the Canadian Coast Guard, out of a total of 23 containers involved, an impressive 16 have been successfully retrieved as of today. This marks a commendable achievement in the ongoing operation to salvage the containers.
The diligent efforts of the crew helped to identify the whereabouts of these containers within the designated area. Luckily, the containers have been confirmed to be free of any hazardous materials.
Local boat operators are being urged to remain vigilant and adhere to navigational warnings in the area as efforts persist to recover debris and locate missing containers. It is crucial for these operators to exercise caution while navigating the waters, ensuring the safety of both themselves and others, according to the Coast Guard.
To remind, according to World Shipping Council (WSC)’s annual report on containers lost at sea, in 2022, 661 containers were lost at sea. This represents less than one thousandth of 1% (0.00026%) of the 250 million containers currently shipped each year.
