Following the fire on the container vessel ZIM Kingston, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is deploying a team to investigate the situation.
To remind, the containership Zim Kingston lost more than a hundred containers on October 22, off the Juan de Fuca Strait, between Canada and the US south of Vancouver Island.
Namely, two damaged containers onboard the containership caught fire, following the collapse and loss overboard of several containers earlier that day, due to extreme weather.
When the fire started, sixteen members of the crew were safely evacuated, while five seafarers remained onboard to tackle the fire, along with a fire extinguishing and salvage agency.
After the incident, DANAOS Shipping managers of Zim Kingston, received permission by the Canadian Coast Guard to allow the boarding of technical experts from the company as well as two marine firefighters. The fire aboard the vessel took about a week to contain.
In light of the accident, a team from the Transportation Safety Board has been assigned to investigate the fire that destroyed containers aboard a freighter now moored off the south coast of Vancouver Island.
TSB team will “gather information and assess the occurrence” aboard the MV Zim Kingston.
For the records, Transportation Safety Board investigates marine, air, pipeline and rail transportation occurrences, issues public reports if warranted and can make recommendations to address any safety deficiencies identified by its teams.
