Despite the turmoil caused by Hanjin Shipping bankruptcy in the shipping industry, Busan Port Authority managed to achieve a growth in 2017. The South Korean port marked the achievement of box traffic volume of 20 million TEU with a ceremony, on the 26th of December, in order to express its gratitude to port and logistics industry workers for their hard work.
This is the largest cargo volume handled by BPA since its opening in 1876. Specifically, Busan Port’s first container pier, Jasungdae Pier, became the world’s 2nd largest container T/S hub in 40 years since its opening. By handling 20 million TEUs, the port has now become a mega port.
The ceremony was attended by Woo Yong Jong, President of Pusan Port Corporation, and the marine port officials.
“By utilizing a new opportunity, we will create better business environment where all the related industries, groups, and organizations can prosper. We will create more jobs in the port sector to become a national corporation co-existing with citizens.” said Woo Ye-jong, BPA President, mentioned.
BPA also revealed its plans to take the lead in resolving safety and environment issues in accordance with the government policy.
