The motor vessel Algoma Verity has been successfully refloated and is now moored at Tioga Marine Terminal on the Delaware River, about two miles north of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge.
The vessel was refloated at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Saturday 11 January during the incoming tide. Coast Guard personnel, along with representatives from the ship’s owners and salvage teams, remain aboard to ensure the vessel, crew, and environment remain safe.
The grounding occurred on the evening of while 8 January when the Algoma Verity was northbound carrying approximately 45,000 tons of solar salt. No injuries were reported. Coast Guard watchstanders quickly issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and dispatched a response team.
Capt. Kate Higgins-Bloom of Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay commended the efforts of the on-scene team and emphasized the ongoing work to safely remove the vessel from the port. A safety zone has been established around the vessel, restricting traffic 100 yards upriver and downriver of the Tioga Marine Terminal. Mariners wishing to transit the area must contact the Coast Guard in advance.
The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
