On Monday, 29 April, the Brittany Ferries passenger ship ‘Pont-Aven’ suffered an engine room fire while sailing about 77 nautical miles (142 kilometers) south of the Pointe de Penmarch (Finistère), off West France, the Maritime Prefecture of Atlantic informed.
At the time of the incident, the 185-meter-long ship was en route from Plymouth to Santander, carrying a total of 908 people (766 passengers and 142 crew members) onboard, according to initial information provided by Brittany Ferries.
The ship sent a distress call at the Regional Operational Center of Rescue and Rescue (CROSS) Etel reporting the fire.
A Cayman Navy helicopter with a team of firefighters and an evaluation and intervention team (IEE) was immediately sent onboard. The assistance and rescue intervention tug (RIAS) ‘Abeille Bourbon’ also headed to the scene.
Around 4:40 am, the fire was out. No injuries were reported.
