Following the environmental goals set by the shipping industry, BMW Group aims to using zero-emission cargo vessels from 2030, highlighting the importance of making the transportation as environmentally friendly as possible.
Specifically, BMW has already joined the ‘Getting to Zero Coalition‘ in efforts of making shipping greener.
The Group believes that notion towards cutting CO2 emissions and decarbonizing the shipping industry, should include not only the end product but also how the product was made and delivered.
Jürgen Maidl, senior vice-president, production network and supply chain management at BMW Group commented that
Maritime transport is crucial for supplying the BMW Group’s international manufacturing network and for the global distribution of vehicles.
The Group is in line with the coalition’s plans on using zero-emission cargo vessels from 2030, part of the wider effort of reducing emissions across its chain value.
In addition, the German car manufacturer added that about 5,000 container ships and hundreds of roll-on, roll-off vessels primarily used by them to transport vehicles are currently cruising the world’s oceans.
Some of those ships are almost 400 metres long and even Ro-Ro freighters can require a parking space of up to 250 metres while loading up to 6,000 cars at a time. Compared to other forms of transport, it is – initially anyway – the environmentally sensible option.
