BIMCO published a climate change glossary, to clarify and harmonise definitions and terminology to ensure that the discussions around climate change and potential solutions for the shipping industry are based on a mutual understanding of what the commonly used terms mean.
This is intended to harmonise the language used within the shipping industry.
The Glossary of Climate Change Definitions (the Glossary) was first published in June 2022.
Following the adoption of IMO’s 2023 Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships (the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy), and the Guidelines on Life Cycle GHG Intensity of Marine Fuels (LCA Guidelines), the Glossary was revised to align with the language used in the strategy.
The new version 2, dated 15 December 2023, includes new definitions of “boundary” and “near zero”, while also updating a number of existing definitions related to the concepts of “neutrality” and “net zero”.
Based on the developments in the IMO since the 78th session of the Marine Environment Pro3ection Committee (MEPC 78) held in June 2022 and the latest session of the IMO’s Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC 9) held in September 2023, the timing is right for MEPC to consider the proposal to develop a glossary of definitions relevant to the reduction of GHG emissions from shipping. We hope the glossary can help to harmonise the language used in the shipping industry and be used for further discussions by MEPC.
