BIMCO launches a survey aimed at ships of BIMCO members. The survey concerns Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) operating anomalies and has been developed in order to collect and report any findings on this specific matter.
On 1 July 2012, a new mandatory carriage requirement for ECDIS entered into force. Notwithstanding that the regulation has been put into force, BIMCO has become aware that not all ECDIS have been fully effective; some ECDIS failed to display significant underwater features in the “Standard” display mode.
BIMCO welcomes the fact that this problem is currently being dealt with, and that the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has issued a circular providing advice to mariners on this matter. The more information IMO receives on this important matter, the faster the anomalies can be removed by ECDIS through software updates.
We therefore urge all members to participate in this important survey.
Three quick and easy steps on how you can take part in this consultation process:
- Select the format for the consultation document: choose either a web form or a PDF form. The two are identical but made available to provide you the best and most convenient option;
- Complete the selected consultation form, and
- Submit the completed consultation form.
Note that companies may act as relay from ships to ensure the widest possible participation from all stakeholders in the maritime sector. We are keen to take on board all responses for analysis, with a view to reporting the findings to the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee in June 2013.
