The BIMCO ESG network held its first meeting of 2025, and the 7th of the network on 14 January, discussing the complexity of human rights elements to be included in ESG reporting.
According to BIMCO, in recent years, the shipping industry has become increasingly aware of its role in environmental sustainability. Climate related disclosures are becoming more important nestled in new goals set by the IMO, and there is a growing awareness of “nature-related disclosures” related to the impact of shipping on biodiversity.
However, even though diversity and inclusion is often well covered in ESG reporting, the incorporation of human rights criteria appears to be more of a challenge.
In addition, discussions within the group focused on how to deal with human rights due diligence in regards to small suppliers and where information might not be readily available.
In the second half, the group returned to the topic of supply chain due diligence and the proliferation of customer questionnaires and the lack of consistency and standards between them.
With the growing focus on promoting sustainable practices, enhancing resilience, and creating long-term value in alignment with ESG principles, SAFETY4SEA has also launched this year’s ESG Climate Survey, a comprehensive industry-wide survey running through Q1 and Q2 of 2025.
