By 2026, NEOM Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC) plans to build the world’s largest green-hydrogen-based ammonia production facility powered by renewable energy in Saudi Arabia.
The facility located in NEOM, smart city in Tabuk Province in northwestern Saudi Arabia, and contributes to the country’s Vision 2030. When completed in 2026, it will produce 600 tonnes per day of clean hydrogen by electrolysis using thyssenkrupp technology. Also, it will produce nitrogen by air separation using Air Products technology, and up to 1.2 million tonnes per year of green ammonia. When complete, the project will mitigate the impact of 5 million metric tonnes of carbon emissions per year.
- Mature production – Target: Green ammonia
- Higher volumetric energy density than hydrogen
- Lower fire risk- higher ignition temperature (>900°C)
- Can be used in diesel engines, gas turbines, fuel cells
- It requires a pilot fuel for combustion
- Need to abate NOx emissions
- Green ammonia could drive investment in renewable energy
The NGHC brings together three market innovators in the fields of hydrogen, energy, renewables, and global networks with track records of more than 80 years of combined experience. ACWA Power, a renewable energy expert, Air Products, the world’s largest hydrogen producer, and the pioneering NEOM sustainable living initiative have formed an equal joint venture.
