According to news, the shipping channel into the Port of Baltimore will reopen this weekend, 75 days after the 9,962 TEU containership Dali lost power, crashed into a bridge, and disrupted operations at most of the ninth-largest port in the United States.
In particular, a video showcases crews making the final cuts, lifting, and transporting a large steel segment of the bridge to Sparrows Point in Maryland. This bridge truss trapped the cargo ship, the Dali, for weeks. Clearing out this bridge debris is crucial for reopening the channel.
As informed, the work to restore the channel will be complete by June 10th.
Background
The Key Bridge Response Unified Command crews will use dredging buckets and a large salvage grab to remove smaller debris from the water before reopening the full channel this weekend.
Last month, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in the US released a preliminary report on the Dali’s fatal collision with Baltimore’s largest bridge.
The vessel, managed by Synergy Group and chartered to Maersk, experienced electrical blackouts around 10 hours before departing the Port of Baltimore and again shortly before it collided with the Francis Key Bridge, resulting in the deaths of six construction workers.
