The Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA) announced that it recorded its lowest ever number of annual detentions after port state control (PSC) inspections. Specifically, only 24 ships were detained during 2018.
Commenting on these results, BMA’s Chair, Mrs J. Denise Lewis-Johnson, believes that this showcases the efforts to ensure a high quality of ships under Bahama’s register. It also reinforces its commitment to comply with the international conventions requirements.

The Bahamas is white listed and considered a ‘low risk’ flag within the Paris MOU and Tokyo MOU. It has also secured Qualship 21 status from the US Coast Guard.
Additionally, BMA’s Acting Managing Director & CEO Captain Dwain Hutchinson, stated:
Ultimately, these achievements are as a result of working closely with our ship owners and managers to ensure that their ships and shipboard crew meet the required high-quality standards. By doing so, we can play an integral role in helping to keep their ships moving and avoid detentions or delays
