The autonomous vessel prototype Mayflower began its transatlantic voyage to Plymouth, Massachusetts, having left from the UK.
The AI-enabled, electric-powered vessel was developed by IBM with the non-profit ocean research organization ProMare.
The Mayflower is equipped with a range of scientific instruments to take measurements during its long journey, covering everything from water chemistry to microplastic pollution to whale song.
The vessel’s navigation is powered by a marine AI, and according to IBM, the vessel’s scientific package also leverages AI capabilities to further its mission.
Furthermore, IBM says that the ultimate objective is a network of autonomous research boats, drones and submersibles that are capable of spending months at sea.
It’s been a pleasure to be the homeport for the MAS (@ArtieHas7Legs)witness the incredible development of the ship, and the extraordinary teamwork between so many marine autonomy companies including @Marine_Ai1 @IBMResearch MSubs and many more. pic.twitter.com/uvPmoBMYN6
