Dr. Kostas Gkonis

Dr Gkonis is a professional with 20 years of experience. His work has been focusing on maritime policy and the industry’s environmental soundness, decarbonisation, sustainability, ESG, and innovation. He holds the position of Director / Secretary General of INTERCARGO since Oct. 2016. During his time, the Association’s Membership has more than doubled to about 25% (basis deadweight tonnage) of the global dry bulk fleet, bringing together more than 220 forward thinking companies from 30 countries and promoting quality dry bulk shipping. He holds a PhD in Maritime Transport from the National Technical University of Athens – NTUA (Laboratory for Maritime Transport, School of Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering), a M.Sc. in International Business (Manchester School of Management, UMIST) and a M.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering with specialisation in energy (NTUA)

Intercargo to examine future amendments to the IMSBC Code

Kostas G. Gkonis, Secretary General, Intercargo, says the 2016 topics and concerns continue in 2017, therefore, liquefaction remains a major problem for dry bulk shipping as well. Dr. Gkonis said that the Association is looking into future amendments to the IMSBC Code and plans to develop a new guide for masters on cargoes that may liquefy to increase awareness on that important topic.
