John Sypnowich

John Sypnowich is Chief Legal and Compliance Officer of The CSL Group Inc. In this role, he is responsible for the legal, risk and compliance functions for the company and a member of the Executive Committee.

The CSL Group Inc. (CSL) is a leading provider of marine dry bulk cargo handling and delivery services and the world’s largest owner and operator of self-unloading vessels. Headquartered in Montreal, CSL is a Canadian-based, privately-owned shipping company with affiliate offices in Halifax and Winnipeg (Canada), Boston (USA), London (UK), Bergen (Norway), Jakarta (Indonesia), Singapore, and Sydney (Australia). Approximately 1,500 people worldwide – both shipboard and ashore – are employed by CSL. Through our operating divisions, – Canada Steamship Lines, CSL Americas, CSL Australia, CSL Asia, CSL Europe and CSL Transhipment – CSL owns and operates a highly diversified fleet of specialized self-unloading vessels, off-shore transhippers and Handysize bulk carriers.

John has also been Chair of the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network, a global business network working towards the vision of a maritime industry free of corruption that enables fair trade to the benefit of society at large, from 2018 to 2022. Established in 2011 by a small group of committed maritime companies, MACN has grown to include over 170 members globally and has become one of the pre-eminent examples of collective action to tackle corruption.

Prior to joining CSL in 2008, John occupied a senior legal role with a major Canadian company and worked in private practice with a law firm in Montreal. John is a member of the Quebec bar and holds a B.A. from the University of Toronto, an LLB and BCL from McGill University and a certificate in executive management from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
