Dr. Jan de Kat

Jan Otto de Kat has worked since December 2012 for ABS in Copenhagen and is Technical Director of Operational and Environmental Performance in the Global Marine division. He has worked as Senior Director and Head of Innovation in the Maersk Maritime Technology division of A.P. Moller-Maersk between 2007 and 2012, where he coordinated new development projects aimed at reducing fuel consumption and environmental impact of the vessels operated by Maersk Line, Maersk Tankers and Maersk Supply Service.

From 1989 through 2006 he worked at the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN), Wageningen, the last 7 years as Director of Research and Development during which he was responsible for research related to ship propulsion, manoeuvring, seakeeping and offshore mechanics, instrumentation development and joint industry projects. He was chairman of the Cooperative Research Ships forum and of the Cooperative Research Navies Dynamic Stability forum. At IMO he chaired the working group tasked with revision of the 1988 Load Line Convention.

He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in naval architecture and offshore engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, and his B.Eng. degree in naval architecture from the University of New South Wales, Sydney.
