An attempted attack was reported against a Singapore-registered LPG tanker on 13 December, at the Port of Algiers, Algeria. Three perpetrators attempted to board the ship while at berth but aborted the attempt when the crew raised the alarm.
While at berth, the duty officer spotted three perpetrators attempting to board the ship by using the forward mooring lines while the ship was discharging cargo, according to data provided by ReCAAP ISC. The alarm was raised and the perpetrators escaped.
The crew conducted a stowaway search and confirmed that there was no sign of unauthorised persons onboard. No injury was reported and nothing was stolen.
The incident was reported to the Port Facility Security Officer (PFSO), who boarded the ship to monitor the situation.
While the figures are not worrying for North Africa, the alarming trend for African piracy has been the Gulf of Guinea in the west part of the country, accounting for the 86% of crew taken hostage and nearly 82% of crew kidnappings globally in the first nine months of 2019, according to IMB.
