According to Reuters, Ambrey reported that a Malta-flagged container ship observed three explosions, 15 miles southwest of Yemen’s Mocha.
Ambrey indicated that three missiles were fired from Yemen’s Taiz Governorate. A nearby vessel reported sighting a small boat, approximately 50 meters in length, with two lights, within 1 mile of the incident location, Reuters notes.
Ambrey assessed that while the targeted vessel wasn’t Israel-affiliated, the affiliation of other vessels in the operator’s fleet with Israel might have been a reason for the attack.
Several shipping lines have suspended operations in the Red Sea in response to these attacks, opting for a longer route around Africa. For instance, after a Maersk vessel was attacked twice by Houthi rebels over the weekend, the company has temporarily halted transportation across the Red Sea.
The Houthi militants in Yemen, who are backed by Iran, have increased attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea in protest against Israel’s conflict in Gaza.
