At least three people were killed when a general cargo ship flying the flag of Guinea-Bissau with 14 Syrian crew members sank off Turkey’s coast early on Wednesday morning.
The metal-transporting Joe 2 was on route from the Turkish port of Iskenderun to Ukraine when it sank off the coast of Kumluca in the Antalya province. It remains unclear what caused the ship to sink. An investigation has been launched by the chief prosecutor’s office for Kumluca.
After receiving a distress call at 3:47 a.m., a vessel, numerous boats, and two helicopters were dispatched. Eight of the fourteen Syrian crew members on board were saved, while three died. Three members of the crew are still missing.
Three crew members were rescued by nearby vessels, and two were rescued by coast guard helicopters. It was stated that the storm at sea is impeding rescue efforts, despite the fact that efforts to save additional victims are ongoing.
