Shreyas Shipping and Logistics Limited, the operators of the container ship SSL Kolkata, informed that the vessel remains aground in soft mud some 7.5 nautical miles off the lndian Sunderbans, Kolkata, West Bengal. However, counter pollution response has started.
A team from OSRL has arrived on site and is managing the counter pollution response with crews of small local craft trawlers locally. These vessels can more easily approach the vessel at its grounded position.

The salvors of the vessel Smit have also deployed their SMlT Borneo platform which is currently heading to the site to help with remaining bunker, cargo, and debris removal operations.
This comes after a total of 22 crewmen were evacuated from the general cargo vessel ‘SSL Kolkata’, after the vessel suffered an explosion to one of its containers and a subsequent fire, while underway off Sandheads, Bay of Bengal, during June.
The vessel has developed a list to starboard, with the deck now part submerged. The removal of bunker fuel and cargo remains a priority, as well as protecting the marine environment and preventing any pollution from cargo or fuel oil.
