Industry’s strong response during consultation on Australian near coastal seafarer certification provided valuable feedback on the suggested changes to make seafarer certification easier to understand and apply.
The legislative requirements regarding seafarer certification affect thousands of Australians working across the broad spectrum of the domestic commercial vessel industry.
The valuable feedback we received has been instrumental in the final stage of developing the updated domestic commercial vessel qualifications framework.
Some of the focus areas AMSA has been working to deliver include:
- Clarifying the operating limits and minimum training requirements to obtain a Coxswain grade 3 near coastal certificate of competency.
- Apply appropriate training requirements and duties for the General purpose hand near coastal certificate of competency.
- Detailing sea service requirements, including obtaining a certificate of competency with and without a task book.
AMS is now working on guidelines, transitional arrangements and some consequential amendments to Marine order 504 (certificates of operation and operation requirements).
We aim to have the amended Marine order 505 ready in coming months with an appropriate transition period for industry to comply.
