Amnesty International has reported new shipments of aviation fuel to Myanmar, defying international calls to cut off supplies to the country’s military, which uses the fuel for unlawful air strikes.
In January 2024, Amnesty revealed how the Myanmar military had adopted new tactics to import aviation fuel throughout 2023, circumventing sanctions on parts of its supply chain. Between January and June 2024, at least two and possibly three more shipments of aviation fuel have entered Myanmar. The fuel underwent multiple transactions before arriving in Vietnam and being shipped to Myanmar.
Companies involved in these transactions include Singapore and Chinese-based companies, with a likely third shipment originating from the UAE in May 2024.
Although the end use of the fuel remains uncertain, the Myanmar military’s control of the port raises concerns about its potential use for military purposes.
Amnesty International’s Secretary General, Agnes Callamard, condemned the ongoing supply chain, highlighting the impunity of the Myanmar military and the complicity of Vietnam, China, and Singapore in facilitating these shipments.
