Algeria has become the 79th state to ratify the the International Labour Organization (ILO) Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC), which sets out minimum international standards for the working and living conditions of seafarers on board ships.
Algeria is estimated to supply 1,137 of the world’s seafarers, and it has a merchant fleet of 138 ships totalling 747,500 gross tonnage. The port of Algiers is one of the most important seaports in North Africa.
The MLC first came into force on 20 August 2013 and has now been signed by states representing 91 percent of the world gross tonnage of shipping. It will enter into force for Algeria on 22 July 2017.
