Piracy threat continues in the Indian Ocean
Earlier this month, NATO maritime Command’s Deputy Commander, Vice Admiral Christian Canova, addressed the NATO Parliamentary Assembly on NATO’s maritime role and the evolution of the security conditions in the Indian Ocean.
Pirate attacks off the Somali coast, one of the world’s busiest shipping areas, have dramatically decreased this year – three years after NATO and the European Union began conducting naval patrols there – but VAdm Canova is warning against complacency.
“We are containing them, we are succeeding, but piracy is not eradicated. The shipping industry may be back in business like it was in 2006, but pirates are still in Somalia,” VAdm Christian Canova told parliamentarians in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Defence and Security Committee.
