Working with Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co., Ltd. (HHIC), as it just completed a new Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) design concept, ABS issued a safety guidance and advice on regulatory compliance throughout concept development.
In particular, ABS reviewed the smaller 25,000 m 3 design concept, which incorporates four type C cargo tanks, to simplify the transfer of gas to the storage terminal, and applied its latest safety standards, confirming that the conceptual design meets applicable class requirements.
“Partnering with ABS and leveraging its knowledge and experience in LNG regasification helped us prove the feasibility of the concept and better understand the safety implications throughout development of the design,” says HHIC Executive Managing Director Moon-Tae Yoon.
As the industry is exploring options for getting gas to new markets, ABS focuses on collaborations with innovators who are looking closely at FSRUs as an efficient gas solution. Recognizing the changing landscape and increased industry focus on gas, ABS launched its Global Gas Solutions team in 2013 to support industry in developing gas-related projects. It also classed the world’s first LPG carrier conversion, the first LNG carrier conversion, the Methane Pioneer, in 1959, as well as the first newbuild LNG carrier, Methane Princess, in 1964.
